A-Z of Things Unseen: W is for Wafer

The Community of Saint Clare in Freeland, Oxfordshire, is made up of contemplative Anglican women. One of the things they do to earn their living is to bake communion wafers.

In this edition of our A-Z, Sisters Caroline Clare and Susan Elizabeth show us how they go about this, from preparing the batter to using ‘the Church of England’s equivalent of a waffle iron’. They also explain how the wafers are used and what they mean to believers, and how prayer goes into each batch of wafers.

In the A-Z of Things Unseen, speakers from different faith communities take on a letter from the alphabet each and discuss a concept of their choice in a short reflection.
